The 911 R is without question the most special edition from the 991 generation. It is easily the most sought after and fought for 911 released in recent memory.  If you were lucky enough to be allotted one you probably doubled your money.  Porsche as company has been weaving a particular kind of magic into their cars for a long time now but this car might be the zenith.  What other product when sold new is worth 2 to 3 times what you paid for it? The 911 R is the only one I can think of and there is a very good reason for it.  

Gear heads across the globe have been clamoring for the best Porsche can offer without the unnecessary frills that help them sell to the masses. The engineers in Stuttgart heard their cries and the 911 R was born.  Porsche described its philosophy during its development as “Purity of Principle” and this lightened, specialized version is exactly what a purists dreams are made of. Built on the same platform as the epic GT3 the R ditches the PDK and is sold with a 6 speed manual transmission the way the universe intended. It steals tech from its brother the GT3 RS using extremely lightweight materials for the body panels, the roof is a thin sheet of magnesium and the hood and front quarter panels are manufactured from carbon fiber.

Note this car is missing the fixed rear wing ever present on the performance-oriented 911’s and has instead been fitted with a standard Carrera rising rear wing that give it the classic lines we know and love.  To compensate Porsche designed a unique underbody diffuser to make sure it wasn’t lacking downforce. The R is good for 500hp and 338lb-ft of torque from its 4.0 litre naturally aspirated engine, the transmission is a short throw 6-speed GT Sport version that is sublimely crisp.
